Environment

“With population and consumption continuing to grow, the per-capita resources left to be harvested are shrinking. The long-term prospects are not promising. Awakened at last to this approaching difficulty, we have begun a frantic search for substitutes” (Wilson, 946). E.O. Wilson argues that humans are harming the planet, and need to turn to other options for resources in order to save it. Humans have been robbing the planet of its key resources for years. These resources, such as forests, petroleum, and ground water, are ultimately running out, subjecting the planet to detrimental effects. We humans only focus on our own needs and wants, not giving so much as a thought to others of our own kind or even other species. The utter carelessness of humanity is the initial cause of the decline of earth’s key resources. But what can we do about this? How can we stop this? It is our responsibility to respect the environment and have boundaries that are not crossed. We need to uti...

School Moms: A Parody of Dance Moms by Paige and Emma

Image
Harvard University, with a 5.9% acceptance rate, is one of the most competitive ivy league colleges in the country. Five high school seniors- Chloe, Kendall, Nia, Maddie, Brooke, and Mackenzie- are all vying for a spot at this prestigious university- but only one will be accepted. All five of these girls have near perfect grade point averages and test scores, but it’s their moms that set them apart. Some moms are less concerned with their roles in their child’s education, but others will do anything and everything to get their child to the top. The Harvard Office of Admissions puts the applicants in a pyramid to rank them and decide who will be accepted- only the person on the top of the pyramid will get the spot.  The bottom three on the pyramid are Mackenzie, Nia, and Kendall. These three all have around a 4.0 grade point average, involved in after school activities, such as basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. They sometimes volunteer in their communities, however, not as much...

Types of Englishes

Image
Every day, I use English to communicate with the people around me. I use English to share my thoughts and opinions and to say what I think. However, my English is not always the same. The way I speak changes with the different people I talk to. Around my friends, my English is very informal and casual. When I speak to my friends, I feel very comfortable and don't feel like I'm being judged or that I need to speak a certain way to impress them. People my own age are easiest to talk to because we all speak in similar ways and can easily understand each other. When I'm around people my age that I'm not familiar with, I'm more quiet and say things that I think they would want to hear. When I'm with my close friends, I know they won't' judge me for what I say, so I don't feel the need to be quiet. Family, on the other hand, while I'm still very comfortable speaking to them, I don't always say certain sayings that I say around my friends. My pa...

Metacognitive Reflection

Image
Over the course of this semester,  I've seen my writing change and improve vastly. I think I've had much improvement due to the amount of writing we do in class. We've done many different kinds of essay that have helped me to find my writing style. I like doing many writing assignments in class because I like getting the feedback on my writing, and knowing what I can do better. I've had my friends and my family look at my writing to help me see what can be improved. My older brother has been very helpful to me. After I get a grade back on my writing, he looks at it and tells me what I did well, and what I could've done better at. I think my writing will continue to improve over second semester with all the feedback I've gotten. This semester, I think I've improved my analysis and expanding it. While I could expand more on my ideas, I think I've been able to see and interpret ideas in different ways than I used to. I used to write about ideas in a very si...

"Why I Want an AP Student to Take My Tests", a parody of "Why I Want a Wife" by Judy Brady

Image
I belong to that classification of people known as AP students. I am an APER. Not too long ago an average classmate of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a failed test. He is looking for a solution to his problem, an AP student to take his tests for him. As I thought about him while I was doing my homework one evening, it suddenly occurred to me that I, too, would like to have an AP student take my tests for me. Why do I want an AP student to take my tests? I want an AP student who will study their very hardest, for hours and hours. I want an AP student who will put in the greatest effort possible to earn the highest grade for me. My AP student should have at least a GPA of a 4.0, preferably higher. I want an AP student who will give up sleeping, eating, socializing and all their activities to study for my tests. My AP student should be able to give up their life for me and my tests. I want an AP student that will go to the library constantly to consult the best reso...

What Ever Happened to Abigail Williams?

Image
After denying what happened between John Proctor and I, and getting him wrongfully arrested, you would think someone as ruthless as I, Abigail Williams, would want to stick around to gloat. I was very tempted to do so, I will not lie. But being completely honest, the only reason I started all of this madness was to be rid of Elizabeth Proctor. All I wanted was to get John Proctor back for myself. But the moment he stood before everyone, and admitted to what we had done, I knew my chances were over. Even Elizabeth's lies told me it was done with. Her lying was her not only to protect John, but also to keep John for herself. So even though John ended up being arrested, I felt I was the one that needed to be taken away. What was the point in staying here if I could not have John Proctor? I wanted to free him of his wife so that I could take her place, but instead, he was taken from me. I won, but I also lost. I lost the one thing that I wanted. There was no way I could stay in Sal...

A Playlist for the Ever Interesting Characters of The Crucible

Abigail Williams- Misery Business by Paramore To our girl, Abigail, I've given a song that truly seems to capture her true essence. Abigail is very clearly depicted as a liar throughout The Crucible. She is responsible for dancing, accusing, and manipulation. She is extremely sneaky, and does not suppress any of her desires. Misery Business by Paramore is a perfect representation of Abigail because she really seems to be in the business of causing misery. One girl has the ability to have the entire town in chaos, and almost nobody can see through her.  "Well there's a million other girls who do it just like you Looking as innocent as possible to get to who They want and what they like, it's easy if you do it right." These lyrics are the best representation of Abigail because she's trying to put on this act for everyone that she's an innocent girl, when in reality she is anything but. This also can connect to her relationship with John Proctor. Abigail lu...
